In Kulm, North Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair-based testing and has facilities in all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or elsewhere on the body can be used. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing is becoming a favored method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair drug tests over the more standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle testing. This method's key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, achieved through an observed collection process that's nearly impossible to deceive. However, for screenings of drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is recommended to collect 150mg. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a matching quantity of body hair may be collected. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial process of integrating a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary and cost-efficient method to identify drug use in most samples. However, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and gets ready for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels than from other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening highly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed by using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are washed as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
