Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lakewood Park, North Dakota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our company specializes in hair testing, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair testing choices.

In recent years, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers favor these tests. The key advantage is a considerably extended detection window for drug use, often up to 90 days, with observed collection, making it virtually uncheatable. However, a urine test remains the most precise for drug consumption in the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is needed to provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or assessments exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. We suggest weighing this sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes any other hair categories (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in a laboratory primarily involves four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This includes ensuring that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result at this stage must be substantiated for court acceptance. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is harvested from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid); this makes hair drug testing a more challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive result in Screening is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: The results of a hair drug test are more reliable due to the difficulty in altering them.
  • Offers usage history: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just highlighting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically involves greater costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as individual hair growth rates and hair color can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, but the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
