Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Landa, ND. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we are proficient in hair-based tests with centers across all US cities, ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various other personalized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prominent. Employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine analysis. This testing method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. The key advantage is detection of drug use over 90 days, obtained under observation, making tampering nearly impossible, though urine tests remain optimal for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective tool for detecting substance use. Hair offers a comprehensive view of drug and alcohol use by sequestering biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 90-day detection period for substance use. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of approximately 200 strands of hair, cut to 1.5 inches in length and close to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for screen confirmations. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, it's advisable to collect 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (facial, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in laboratories encompasses four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial steps of processing a sample into the laboratory’s database. This step ensures the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information entry not handled by an electronic custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive finding must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples that indicate presumptive positivity in Screening do require further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Drugs are removed from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening a more technically challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned as necessary prior to the confirmation process. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter range of detection.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, providing more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical usage patterns: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair pigmentation and individual hair growth speed can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", this analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
