Accredited Drug Testing offers a full suite of hair follicle drug testing services in Leal, North Dakota. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol drug test, our specialty is hair testing, available at various testing centers across the nation. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse authorities opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation compliance. The main advantage is their extended detection period for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, with sample collection done under supervision, making it nearly infallible. Nonetheless, to detect drug usage from the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of alcohol and other drug consumption by preserving biomarkers within its growing strands. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (analogous to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. All samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the main specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples may undergo washing as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
