What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a historical record of alcohol and drugs by sealing biomarkers in the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximate thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we imply scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory system. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be affirmed to be valid in court. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a trend of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug examination methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand and does not involve the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Michigan, ND offers superior benefits over the traditional urine tests. Enhanced detection accuracy and a longer window of assessment make it a preferred choice for many. With hair follicle testing, substances can be detected with greater reliability and over a larger period.

The reproducible reliability of hair follicle tests further underscores its significance. Urine tests often face a criticism of inaccuracy and easy tampering, making hair tests a more foolproof method.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests detect drug use over up to 90 days, offering a much broader window than other testing methods. This extended detection time grants employers a detailed view of drug usage history.

With such comprehensive insights available, businesses in Michigan, ND, benefit from a better understanding of an individual's drug use, making these tests a preferred choice for long-term evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Michigan, ND offer a tamper-resistant solution to drug testing challenges. Unlike urine tests that are susceptible to external manipulation, hair tests provide a more secure option.
