Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Minnewaukan, North Dakota. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers can be found in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used for testing, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized substances.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many organizations, including employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method is favored for its extended detection period, spanning up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and its resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. This method is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An optimal sample for screening and confirmation consists of a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, totaling 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair cannot be retrieved, a comparable amount of body hair is permissible. When discussing head hair, only scalp hair is addressed. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase of a sample in a lab’s system. This step verifies the appropriate sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data input that the electronic chain of custody system may not provide.

Screening executes a swift preliminary check for drug misuse. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for courtroom eligibility. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Positive screening confirmation is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with much shorter detection timelines.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test presents high difficulty, enhancing result precision.
  • Tracks usage trends: It provides insights into the substance use pattern over time, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result disparities: Attributes such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
