Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Nortonville, North Dakota. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis. Our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is used. We offer tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailor-made options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained traction for drug screening. Organizations, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists are opting for it over standard urine analysis. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is an extensive detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it difficult to tamper with. For recent drug use, urine testing remains the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a detailed history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When closely collected from the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair, however, includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps involved in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into a laboratory system. This process ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it presents a cost-effective means to discard drug usage for most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples with a presumptively positive result in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
