Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Oxbow, North Dakota. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis with testing facilities in all U.S. cities capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair exams can be customized to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for identifying drug use. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair over urine tests. Hair analysis is favored by organizations enforcing drug-free policies and by courts and probation setups. Its key advantage is a prolonged drug detection period—up to 90 days—with nearly foolproof accuracy. However, for drug detection in the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures historical data on alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. If sampled near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirming. For EtG, additional testing, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advocate verifying the weight of the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in lab processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This step includes affirming the sample's secure seal and correct shipment, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial swift evaluation for drug usage. Despite Screening being a budget-friendly methodology to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be corroborated for legal acceptance. Any sample testing positive in Screening warrants a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, extra hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drug substances are drawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than found in techniques such as urine or oral fluid testing, underscoring why hair drug analysis stands as the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive detection during screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug screenings often bear a higher price tag than other testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
