Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Petersburg, North Dakota. For individuals requiring hair or alcohol drug tests, our expertise lies in hair testing with available testing centers nationwide, ensuring a hair test can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is acceptable for testing, allowing analysis for substances including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent years, the preference for hair follicle drug testing over traditional methods has increased. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests rather than standard urine tests. This approach benefits employers with strict drug policies, legal courts, and probation requirements due to its extended detection capability of up to 90 days and minimal chance of tampering. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Recognized extensively, hair testing serves as an efficient means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and can be shipped with ease.

A 1.5-inch sample comprised of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation procedures. For tests like EtG, additional panels, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair are specific to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially processed into a lab’s system, encompassing confirmation of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data tasks not covered by electronic custody systems.

In the Screening phase, an initial assessment for drug presence is conducted. Though a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal scenarios. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is isolated from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted at far lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleaned as required. Each aspect of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug intake up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to falsify, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: Capable of tracing drug use tendencies over time, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: A 5-7 day period is needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variable results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
