Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pillsbury, North Dakota. Whether you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair testing. With numerous centers across various cities nationwide, we facilitate hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for analysis. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular choice for drug testing. They are increasingly demanded by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation, offering a key advantage: a much longer drug-use detection window of up to 90 days. Conducted under observed conditions, hair tests are nearly foolproof, although for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection time frame for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It is advised to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be collected. References to head hair imply scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary handling of a specimen into a lab's framework. This entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples indicative of possible positivity in Screening necessitate an additional verification step.

In events where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisional positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It can exhibit a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs need about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
