If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a rapid initial check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means of excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive findings require subsequent confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
