Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Stanley, North Dakota. If hair drug or alcohol testing is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these services, providing testing centers nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning towards hair tests as opposed to the traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationaries often rely on hair follicle testing. Its key advantage is a longer detection window, stretching to 90 days, performed under observation and hard to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are considered the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands can reflect a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, other enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an affordable method to discount drug use for most samples, any positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in court. Presumptively positive samples during Screening mandate an additional confirmation process.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug testing as the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to the confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, lending more validity to the results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can deliver a drug use pattern over a timeline, rather than indicating just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
