Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Solen, ND. If a hair or alcohol test is required, we specialize in this service at our nationwide centers. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically necessary. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Over the past years, hair follicle tests have gained popularity in drug testing. Many workplaces, courts, and rehab professionals now prefer hair over urine tests. Employers, law courts, and probationers often select this method due to its longer detection span, generally up to 90 days, and its observed collection process, making it hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use detection, the urine test remains the precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a critical method for identifying alcohol and substance consumption. This technique provides a prolonged record of drug and alcohol intake as hair traps markers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, challenging to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a recommended 150mg is necessary. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. If head hair cannot be obtained, similar amounts of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically, while body hair includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The main stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially handling a sample into a laboratory's chain. This process checks that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift analysis for substance presence. Screening offers a cost-effective screening method, but confirms positive screenings are required for court submission. Samples said to be positive at this stage need further confirmation.

If a sample is positively indicated during Screening, more hair is extracted from the specimen for the Extraction phase. This process involves drug extraction from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Washes are applied to presumptive positive samples before confirmation as necessary. The entire path from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Lower likelihood of deception: The complexity in falsifying a hair drug test increases result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over a span, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other forms.
  • Variable results: Individual characteristics like hair shade and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
