At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Voss, North Dakota. Our expertise in hair testing spans the nation, ensuring accessible services for those needing a hair drug or alcohol evaluation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required for testing, which can be tailored to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

The hair follicle drug test has become more prevalent for drug testing in recent times. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over conventional urine tests. It’s ideal for workplaces with strict no-drug policies, judicial contexts, and for those on probation due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and near-impenetrability to tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing still holds higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If hair from the scalp is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main steps involved in the laboratory assessment of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any other data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is found to be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as much as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is rather challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring the outcomes are more precise.
  • Delivers historical information: It can offer a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Voss, ND, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in both accuracy and reliability. Due to its unmatched detection period, hair testing uncovers substance use histories stretching back up to 90 days, offering a broader scope than urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
