Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Wales, North Dakota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert. Our specialized centers, available in every city nationwide, are ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for a test. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing needs.

Nowadays, there's a growing trend in utilizing hair follicle drug tests for drug screenings. More and more employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are favoring this approach over traditional urine tests. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation entities often opt for hair follicle testing. The primary advantage of hair follicle tests is their extensive detection timeframe, capturing drug use up to 90 days back, and their resistance to tampering, though for recent drug use within five days, urine tests still hold their ground as the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting usage of substances such as drugs and alcohol. The hair provides an extended record of these substances by incorporating biomarkers within its strands. When sampled at the scalp, hair can reveal usage over a time frame of up to about three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to adulterate, and conveniently shipped.

An optimal sample for evaluation and corroboration involves 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, which equates to around 100mg. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is appropriate. It's advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair includes other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample’s integrity during sealing and shipping, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any remaining data entry requirements absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for potential drug usage. Though Screening is a cost-efficient means to largely exclude drug usage, any positive results must be confirmed for judicial acceptance. Samples with presumed positivity in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), contributing to the complexity of hair drug assessment.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed to confirm any positive findings from the Screening phase. Presumed positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. This entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days retrospectively, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of illustrating a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
