In White Shield, North Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our expertise includes hair and alcohol testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is enough for testing. Drug analysis, including alcohol/ETG and other tailored options, can be performed through hair tests.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists increasingly choose hair tests over urine tests. For those with zero-tolerance policies, this method offers an extended detection period of around 90 days, collected under direct observation, making it almost impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting very recent drug use, within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an influential method for revealing drug and alcohol intake.Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests broader than 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases involved in the lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was securely sealed and appropriately shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation to hold up in legal contexts. All samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample prove presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug evaluation is the most complex approach to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection range.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly tough to mislead a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It provides a usage pattern of drug intake over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
