Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Addison, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair tests is unmatched. Our nationwide network includes testing centers in every city capable of performing these tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for these tests, which can analyze drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse are preferring hair tests over standard urine screenings. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation cases often rely on this method. The key advantage is its longer detection window of up to 90 days, which is nearly impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substances within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair tests offer up to roughly a 90-day window of detection for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample involves a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, addon tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Drug testing through laboratory methods involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample processing into the lab system. This step involves ensuring proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry tasks aside from what's supplied by an electronic custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances misuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for many samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any screenings that suggest positive results must undergo further confirmation.

Should a Screening test suggest a positive, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. This step detects drugs in hair at much lower levels than through other means (such as urine or saliva), making it a particularly challenging method.

For confirming a positive screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used. Pre-confirmation involves washing presumptive positive samples as necessary. The full journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair analyses can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter period seen in urine analyses.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair analysis is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers usage patterns: Delivers an understanding of drug consumption over some time frame, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drug presence in hair typically takes about 5-7 days to become noticeable.
  • Expense: Hair screening tends to be more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rate can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Addison, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy. With the ability to detect drug use over a longer period, hair tests offer a more reliable record than urine tests, which are limited to a shorter window. Employers and authorities find hair testing invaluable for maintaining compliance with policies.

Extended Detection Window

Addison, OH, benefits from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which can reflect drug use up to 90 days. This testing method provides employers with comprehensive data on an individual's substance history, aiding in informed hiring decisions and ongoing evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
