Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive service for hair follicle drug testing in Adelphi, Ohio. Specializing in hair-related drug and alcohol tests, our centers are available nationwide, ready to provide testing services. Hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches from the head, or body hair may be used. Tests include drug analysis, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

The trend in drug testing has seen a rise in hair follicle tests. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over urinary ones. Used by those enforcing strict no-drug policies, hair tests benefit from a longer detection span of up to 90 days. The supervised collection process is highly secure, minimizing cheating. Yet, urine tests remain preferred for detecting drug use within the last five days due to their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It encapsulates a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage, including alcohol, for nearly a 3-month period. This type of specimen is easy to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair fibers (around the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for assessment and verification. For additional EtG testing or when exceeding 10 panel analyses, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes its preliminary integration into the lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and dispatch, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a swift initial assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to hold validity in legal settings. Samples that are initially positive during Screening must undergo further verification.

For samples that initially appear positive in Screening, additional hair is removed from the original amount and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at a far lesser concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug evaluation the most complex methodology.

Verification of any positive initial outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily deemed positive are cleaned prior to final confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is examined under either the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification or adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are significantly challenging to manipulate, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It provides usage trends across an extended timeline rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent use: It generally takes drugs 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other testing types.
  • Inconsistencies in findings: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Adelphi, OH, the benefits of hair follicle testing surpass traditional urine tests in several ways. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, revealing substance use over a longer period and providing a comprehensive substance history.

Reliability is a core advantage of hair testing. Unlike urine tests, which only detect drug use within a short window, hair tests can identify usage up to 90 days prior, making them a better option for zero-tolerance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
