Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive services for hair follicle drug screening in Aid, Ohio. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, with collection sites throughout the nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair, or other body hair, are needed. Hair screening options extend to testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug screening has increasingly become the preferred method for drug analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary programs rely on this method. Hair tests offer a broad detection window, approximately 90 days, and use an observed collection, making fraud difficult. However, urine tests still offer more accurate results for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records an extensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation processes. For enhanced screens like EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is recommended. We advise measuring the specimen on a precision jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is introduced into the laboratory system. This step involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. This cost-effective procedure helps exclude drug use in most samples, but any positive findings from the screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples indicating presumptively positive results require additional confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which provide shorter-term detection.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It illustrates a pattern of substance use over time, as opposed to only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Concentrations of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Aid, OH
Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers unparalleled benefits. It surpasses in detection precision, giving a more truthful picture of an individual's drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
