Accredited Drug Testing offers a thorough approach to hair follicle drug testing in Ankenytown, Ohio. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair testing is backed by testing sites across all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for its effectiveness. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probation monitoring make frequent use of this method. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it tamper-resistant. Nevertheless, for detecting substances within the past five days, urine tests still lead.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month window for detecting drug and alcohol use. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a recommendation of 150 mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's initial integration into the lab's system. This encompasses ensuring the sample's proper sealing and delivery, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for the presence of drugs. While it is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug usage in most cases, any positive outcome in Screening must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples with tentative positive results during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are removed from the hair at lower concentrations than with alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains the higher complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, any sample with presumptive positive results undergoes washing as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests are able to identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating results of a hair drug test is challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a timeline of drug use over time, not simply recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests have a higher price point compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variability can impact the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
