Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Antrim, Ohio. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, trust in Accredited Drug Testing's expertise. We facilitate hair tests with centers across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length from the head or body suffices. Our hair tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer bespoke testing solutions.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly preferred in recent years for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse authorities often favor it over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with no-drug policies, court mandates, and for those on probation. This method stands out due to its extended drug-use detection window—up to 90 days—conducted under direct supervision, offering little room for deception. Although for very recent drug use, i.e., within 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by storing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence over an approximate 3-month period. Hair samples are easy to collect, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement of the sample. If scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair may be used. For the purpose of identification, "head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process for laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where samples are entered into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that is absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a possible positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insight: They provide a trajectory of drug use over time rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent usage detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand rather than the scalp-embedded follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Antrim, OH surpasses urine testing by offering superior detection reliability. Hair tests provide a wider detection period, discovering substance use that urine tests might miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
