Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Apple Creek, Ohio. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is backed by a nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and cater to other targeted testing requirements.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse experts prefer them over traditional urine tests. Organizations upholding strict no-drug policies and legal bodies commonly opt for hair tests due to their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, making them hard to evade. However, when detecting recent drug use (within five days), urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair can encapsulate biomarkers in the strands as it grows, providing a long-lasting record of substances like alcohol. A sample collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to around 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

For optimal results, a 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hairs (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is required, yielding 100mg of hair which is suitable for evaluation. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, the same amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we reference only scalp hair. Body hair incorporates other hair types (i.e., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in laboratories consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a specimen into the laboratory system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drug abuse signs. Unlike Screening, which is low cost and eliminates many cases of drug use, positive results need confirmation for legal viability. Samples with a presumptive positive Screening result need further confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positive results from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drug compounds are removed from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Any confirmed positive from Screening undergoes validation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can check for drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage history: Provides a clear trend of drug consumption over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests focus on the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Apple Creek, OH, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine testing for multiple reasons. Unrivaled accuracy and reliability characterize hair tests, offering a broader detection range. Unlike urine testing, which often only reveals recent substance use, hair testing provides insight into patterns of use up to 90 days prior, making it a valuable tool for employers.

These tests are immune to many of the common methods employed to falsify urine test results, ensuring higher authenticity and integrity.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Apple Creek, OH, excels with its extended detection window. This method can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed overview of an individual’s substance history.

This enhanced detection capability allows for a more comprehensive evaluation, seeing past mere short-term drug use and understanding an individual's past behavior over months.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests sets them apart in Apple Creek, OH. Unlike urine tests, hair tests significantly reduce the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring the authenticity of results.

The observed collection process and the biological properties of hair provide a substantial deterrent against cheating, delivering results that are truly reliable and difficult to contest.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
