Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Athalia, Ohio. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair testing assures quality services, with centers available across Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for analysis. We provide drug, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing solutions through hair samples.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular as a preferred method of drug screening. Organizations like employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. The advantage lies in the extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected via an observed process, making it nearly tamper-proof. For recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests retain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the evolving hair strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently shipped.

A sample comprising 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair can be gathered. “Head hair” refers exclusively to scalp hair. “Body hair” encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in the lab process of analyzing drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a specimen into a lab system. It verifies that the specimen is sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplemental data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift examination for drug misuse. Although Screening is a practical method for excluding drug use in most specimens, a positive screen needs validation to be admissible in court. Any samples identified as potentially positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening stage, further hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive results involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that detect in a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It outlines a drug usage pattern over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
