In Aurora, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Are you in need of hair drug or alcohol testing? Our expertise in hair testing spans Nationwide, with centers in every city prepared to conduct a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is generally required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard procedure recently. Employers, the legal system, and substance abuse professionals often require hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial authorities, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days and its near immunity to tampering. Nonetheless, if identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests maintain optimal accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can yield approximately a 3-month detection scope for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair segment comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. In the context of head hair, we specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in the laboratory examination of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s processing system. This task involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening serves as a preliminary overview for potential substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

At the Screening phase, if a sample appears to be positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparing Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing methodology ranks among the most challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as warranted. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timespan.
  • Resistance to fraud: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing the precision of results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage indicators.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternate drug testing methodologies.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", this procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
