Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ava, Ohio. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialization lies in hair analysis with centers available in cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method for drug assessments. More organizations, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Employing hair follicle tests aligns with strict anti-drug policies, serving courts and probationary individuals. The primary advantage includes extended drug-use detection windows of up to 90 days, observed during the collection, minimizing chances of deception. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It records extended usage trends of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. Sampling hair near the scalp offers nearly a three-month window for spotting alcohol and drug traces. The method is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) collected nearest the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the perfect amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, the equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. Here, head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair covers other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning stage includes the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab system. This step checks that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any leftover data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase is a preliminary assessment for potential abuse substances. Although Screening is an efficient initial check to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the primary specimen for Extraction. During this phase, substances are drawn out from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most intricate technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before Confirmation as necessary. The total lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely difficult to manipulate hair drug tests, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: Allows for observing drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent activities.

Constraints:

  • Can't identify recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Price: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and individual growth rates may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this testing actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
