In Bannock, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expert services are available across Nationwide testing centers. Typically, you should have about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been employed for drug screening purposes. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are critical for organizations with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationers. They offer an extended substance detection window of up to 90 days, use a supervised collection method, and are very difficult to tamper with while urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a significant means for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-standing record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month timeframe to detect alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of nearly 200 hair strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred specimen size for screening and confirmation. When it comes to EtG, additional panels, or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be extracted. Our mention of head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages involved in laboratory handling of a drug testing outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the foundational treatment of a sample into a lab’s database. This step verifies that the sample remains sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for misuse of substances. Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening represents the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from the Accessioning to Confirmation stages undergoes verification by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can identify drug intake for as long as 90 days, while urine analyses have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug analysis, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It allows for the identification of drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses usually cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigment and personal variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
