Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bergholz, Ohio. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing, with centers in every city nationwide that can conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over urine tests. These tests serve zero-tolerance workplaces, probation systems, and legal entities. Their main advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection that's hard to deceive. Still, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term biomarkers within its growing fibers, allowing it to showcase a history of substance use. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can offer an up to 3-month detection window for substances like alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily adulterated, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands close to the scalp provides about 100mg, ideal for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panel tests, a specimen size of 150mg is ideal. It's advised to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't provide.

Screening acts as a primary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be verified for legal matters. Presumptive positives from Screening need additional confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Conf irmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It’s a challenge to cheat a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It displays a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
