In Big Plain, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have testing facilities across all major cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. The usual requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or be customized for specific substances.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over typical urine tests. They are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court authorities, and probation officers due to their ability to detect drug use up to 90 days with reliability. While they offer an extended detection window, urine tests remain the best option for identifying drug use in the most recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

The examination of hair has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair can reveal a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can exhibit around a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample approximately consisting of 200 hair strands, similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil, near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. In referring to head hair, it is exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for deriving a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This involves ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any additional data entry needs not met by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage among most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation where necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to evade: Evading a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can establish a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Big Plain, OH, hair tests stand out due to their superior accuracy. Unlike urine tests, they provide a long detection window and are less susceptible to tampering, making them more reliable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
