Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Big Prairie, Ohio. Need a hair or alcohol test? Our specialization in hair analysis ensures that our nationwide centers can efficiently conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. We provide hair analysis for substances, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Hair follicle testing has become a popular method for substance detection recently. More employers, legal systems, and addiction experts are opting for it over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict anti-drug regulations, courts, and probationary individuals often utilize this method. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and difficulty in altering results. Yet, for recent substance use (within 5 days), urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a retrospective account of alcohol and drugs by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For tests like EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and gathers any missing data not supplied by an electronic tracking system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though it's an economical way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court validity. Samples indicated as positive in Screening need further corroboration.

In Screening-affirmed cases, more hair is drawn from the initial batch for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug testing as the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screen results is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with positive presumptions are cleansed before confirmation as required. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Insight into usage history: It gives an overview of drug use patterns over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other methods.
  • Disparities in results: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test is often inaccurately called a "hair follicle test", but it actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
