In Brice, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in all cities throughout the country. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can be scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for evaluating drug use. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug assessments over traditional urine tests. These tests are frequently employed by organizations with strict drug-free policies and individuals on probation. The standout advantage of hair testing is its extended drug detection window, often up to 90 days, with a closely monitored collection process, making it exceptionally difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug consumption within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. The hair shaft captures biomarkers during hair fiber growth, offering a chronological record of drug and alcohol usage. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch hair sample containing around 200 strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will produce 100mg, which is the optimal specimen for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG evaluations, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It's advisable to measure the specimen weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair might be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The comprehensive lab process for analyzing a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the primary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This stage includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial, swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical technique to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo cleaning prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair endorsement and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Yields historical insight: It can exhibit a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequent references to them as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
