Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Buchtel, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these testing methods, with centers available in cities nationwide. Generally, you require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, but body hair can often be used. Hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing choices.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for conducting drug tests. Many employers, law courts, and substance abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation departments frequently resort to hair tests. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug tests is the extended detection window for drug usage, often up to 90 days, with monitored collection processes that are nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now widely recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by seizing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair filament. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present up to about a 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional measures, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair signifies all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes affirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid review for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most intricate technique to execute.

Any presumptive positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair distinction and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
