Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Buckland, Ohio. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair analysis is complemented by testing sites available in every city Nationwide, capable of executing a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown are needed, although body hair can serve as an alternative. Hair analyses can detect drugs, EtG, or cater to other tailor-made testing choices.

Recently, the protocol for drug testing has increasingly featured hair follicle drug analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals lean toward hair drug tests over the conventional urine screening. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers with stringent no-drug-use guidelines, judicial bodies, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is an extended drug-use detection window, generally reaching up to 90 days, under observation during collection and nearly foolproof against tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective approach for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. This method offers an extended retrospective view of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When hair is taken and analyzed close to the scalp, it can reveal substance use history for up to roughly 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, posing a challenge to tamper with, and is convenient for shipping.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, suitable for both initial screening and further confirmation. For EtG analysis, additional tests, or panels surpassing 10, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It is beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifically references scalp hair. On the other hand, body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step comprises ensuring that the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data input if not already provided digitally through a chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid test for detecting substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out substance use in most samples, any positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid). This characteristic makes hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use history for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage patterns: It can illustrate a trend of substance use spanning weeks or months, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier in comparison to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels found in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
