If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.
Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed,and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
