Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Camden, Ohio. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, we at Accredited Drug Testing have specialized expertise in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the nation that provide this service. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for the test. Hair specimens can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown increasingly common for drug testing in recent years. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers and courts often utilize hair tests for those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process, and almost impossible to tamper with. However, to test drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a long-term overview of substance use. Hair taken near the scalp can reveal up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Note that head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial management of a sample into a lab's systems, which covers checking the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not automated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial examination for drug substances. Though cost-effective in excluding drug use for most samples, a positive screen should be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing reveals drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have limited detection periods.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, unlike immediate use detection.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug tests.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing in Camden, OH, hair follicle testing offers substantial advantages over urine tests. It provides superior detection accuracy due to its ability to capture longer-term substance use.

Employers find value in the reliability of hair testing as it comprehensively reveals usage patterns over time, unlike urine tests that provide a short-term snapshot.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Camden, OH, extends the detection window for substance abuse findings. With a capability of uncovering drug use history up to 90 days, employers can access a broader perspective of an individual's substance habits.

Compared to traditional methods, this testing offers a more detailed view of long-term drug usage, helping employers make informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Reducing the risk of sample adulteration is a significant benefit of hair follicle testing in Camden, OH. The method's inherent design prevents tampering, ensuring result integrity.

Employers and individuals can rely on these test results due to their tamper-resistant nature, providing undeniable authenticity when needed in legal and employment contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
