Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Carey, Ohio. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this type of assessment, with facilities throughout the country, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used for these tests. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

Lately, the trend in drug screening has shifted towards using hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests rather than typical urine tests. Those with strict no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation often prefer hair follicle tests. The key advantage of hair follicle assessments is their prolonged detection period for substance use, often reaching up to 90 days, completed in a monitored setting, and is extremely difficult to compromise. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and substances by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and substances. It is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. In discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial process of integrating a sample into a laboratory's procedure. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid check for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical method for eliminating potential drug use in most specimens, a positive screening result must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening demand an additional verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those utilized in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging technique to administer.

Validation of any positive screening results is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage across time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While these tests are often called "hair follicle tests," they actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
