Accredited Drug Testing offers a full range of hair follicle drug testing services in Celeryville, Ohio. Whether you need to test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with accessible centers in every city across the country ready to conduct the necessary examinations. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is sufficient. These tests can be tailored to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

There has been a noticeable shift towards utilizing hair follicle testing for drug detection. Many entities like employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals opt for this method over the standard urine analysis. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services favor hair tests due to their extended detection timeframe, which spans approximately 90 days and is collected under supervision, making deceit virtually impossible. However, for detecting very recent drug use, urine tests continue to prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide up to a roughly 3-month window for identifying alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of drug tests involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to an initial stage where the sample is processed into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although screening effectively rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

Upon detecting a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter detection intervals.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It traces drug consumption patterns over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing modes.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and personal growth patterns can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
