Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Champion, Ohio. If you are in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our company specializes in such testing with facilities in every city across the Nation ready to execute these exams. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be employed. Hair testing can identify drugs, detect alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Over recent years, utilizing hair follicle drug tests has increased in popularity. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are often choosing hair drug tests over conventional urine testing. Such tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and those overseeing probation. The key advantage is the extended detection span of drug usage, typically up to 90 days, which is collected under direct supervision, making it almost impossible to circumvent. Still, for drug use detection within the past five days, the urine test remains unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a compelling method for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged chronology of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month period for the detection of alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

There are four primary phases involved in the laboratory treatment of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with the processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from a digital chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial rapid examination for potential drug abuse. Though Screening offers an economical means to negate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample be identified as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a notably challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash as necessary prior to Confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug usage up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter period of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly improbable, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Yields historical insights: It offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: In general, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
