Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Charm, Ohio. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across every major city nationwide equipped to administer these tests. A sample typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years as the preferred method of screening. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, as well as the judicial system for probation purposes, commonly use this test. Its primary advantage is an extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation and rendering it difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain more precise for use detected in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. The structure of hair traps biomarkers within its fibers, offering a long-term overview of substance intake. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal exposure to drugs and alcohol within an approximate three-month period. It's easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with it, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (analogous to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, this refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases of laboratory processing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample's sealing and proper shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for the bulk of samples, a positive result requires validation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening outcomes is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage across a timeframe, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
