Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Cheviot, Ohio. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair examinations, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of executing this type of test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is generally needed. Hair assessments can be evaluated for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug assessments. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer a hair examination over the conventional urine test. Employers enforcing non-tolerance policies on drug use, legal establishments, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle assessments. The key advantage is an extended detection timeline, typically up to 90 days, conducted under observed conditions, making it challenging to falsify. Yet, for identifying recent drug uptake within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand during growth. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window extending up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taking from nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or analyzes above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that the electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening involves an initial rapid analysis for illicit drug use. Although Screening is an economically feasible method to eliminate drug use in most samples, for the result to be permissible in legal proceedings, a positive screen must be validated. Samples testing presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drug substances are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a highly challenging process.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a considerably shorter timeline.
  • Immunity to deception: It's highly challenging to outmaneuver a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplying historical patterns: Hair tests reveal usage trends over an extended timeline, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels detected in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this procedure actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
