Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Coldstream, Ohio. If a hair or alcohol drug test is required, our expert hair testing services are accessible through our testing centers across various nationwide locations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for these tests. Hair tests offer screening options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing needs.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for conducting drug screenings. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. They are employed by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Hair tests offer a longer detection timeline, up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are challenging to evade. For recent drug use, within a 5-day window, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol usage for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, results in 100mg of hair—the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab's system. It ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any uncompleted electronic data entry tasks.

In the Screening phase, there's an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to eliminating drug use possibilities in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified for court acceptability. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If the Screening phase results are presumptively positive, additional hair is selected from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through methodologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on hair drug tests is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical pattern: Offers a timeline of drug usage rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't indicate recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth rate differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
