Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in College Corner, Ohio. Seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test? Our expertise in hair testing is backed by nationwide centers capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or are customizable to other specific testing needs.

The last few years have seen an increase in hair follicle drug tests in drug screening methods. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Particularly used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation services, the key advantage of hair tests is their longer detection window of up to 90 days, making them hard to manipulate. Despite this, urine tests still offer optimal precision for use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the burgeoning hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample section of 1.5 inches composed of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is removed from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over a span of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Delivers historical insight: The test can exhibit a drug use trajectory over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair samples.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variability in outcomes: Influences such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair samples.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
