Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair sample drug analyses in Copley, Ohio. For those requiring a drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair-based tests, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required. This method can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored assessment choices.

Recently, conducting drug tests often involves analyzing hair follicles. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction counselors opt for this method over conventional urine tests. It is favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary individuals. The chief benefit lies in its extended detection capability, usually lasting up to 90 days, through monitored collection, and being nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug activity in the past 5 days, urine tests still prove superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drugs and alcohol use. Hair retains a prolonged history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When taken from near the scalp, it can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and concluding additional data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails an initial cursory evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a feasible way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples presumptively positive in Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most intricate method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter span of urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug testing is quite difficult to manipulate, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Chronological drug use information: It offers a timeline of drug use over a duration, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The test often dubbed as "hair follicle test" actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
