Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Covington, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and provide services through our testing centers located in cities nationwide to perform a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, although body hair can also be used. Hair tests can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in the method of conducting drug testing. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle drug tests. A primary advantage of hair testing is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, with collections observed, making it almost impossible to fake. However, the urine test remains most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding markers within the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and affirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar proportion of body hair may be acquired. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug testing outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step entails verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any other data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial cursory inspection for drugs of misuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples suspected to be positive during Screening do necessitate further verification.

If a specimen is suspected to be positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a notably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is recognized as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analyses can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine analyses which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is exceptionally tough to deceive a hair drug analysis, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It can provide a record of drug consumption over a duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug compounds in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Covington, OH, hair follicle testing has several advantages over urine testing. Employers seeking more reliable testing methods benefit from hair testing due to its extensive detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which cover a short period, hair analyses offer comprehensive results, capturing a broader substance-use timeline, thereby enhancing detection accuracy and outcome reliability.

For organizations adhering to zero-tolerance policies, hair follicle tests provide superior accuracy. By detecting drug use within a more extended timeframe, these tests ensure workforce and legal obligations are satisfactorily met. Hair testing's unrivaled detection capabilities make it a more favoured option over traditional urine analysis, giving businesses a competitive edge in adhering to safety standards.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing excels in identifying substance use in Covington, OH due to its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, it traces drug use history up to 90 days, offering employers insights into long-term behavior. This comprehensive view aids in making informed decisions about candidates and employees, ensuring that all substance-related issues are effectively addressed with precision.

Employers benefit from the broader coverage hair tests offer, which ensures thorough screening over an extended period. Such a prolonged window gives companies the tools to assess potential workforce risks through detailed substance history insights. Thus, adopting this testing method is crucial for maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Covington, OH's hair follicle testing is known for its tamper-resistant nature, significantly lowering the risk of sample adulteration. The stringent collection and analysis process ensures the results are reliable and credible, providing an indisputable assessment of substance use. This feature is crucial for employers and authorities needing unassailable test results for legal and professional purposes.

In environments with zero tolerance for tampering, hair testing offers unmatched assurance. Its robust methodology effectively prevents any cheating attempts, ensuring that findings reflect the true substance history of an individual. Organizations can trust this process to maintain the integrity of their screening protocols, securing confidence in their assessment capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
