Located in Crestline, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers seamless hair follicle drug testing. With expertise in both drug and alcohol hair testing, our services span nationwide through localized testing centers. For accurate results, it is essential to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, and both scalp and body hair may be used. We specialize in detecting drugs, ETG, alcohol, and more, based on client needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become favored over traditional methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse authorities are increasingly opting for hair tests instead of the more common urine tests. These tests are particularly suited to firms with stringent no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary cases. Their main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and a monitored collection process that greatly prevents tampering.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over approximately a 3-month period. It is uncomplicated to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, collecting 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement of the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance use. While this cost-efficient method can rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal evidence. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

During Extraction, if a sample is presumptive positive in Screening, extra hair is taken from the original specimen for processing. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation for any positive Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike the shorter scope of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It shows a timeline of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair can be affected by factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
