In Creston, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in this service, with facilities across all major locations nationwide. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the crown or body, tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a popular method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor this test over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation benefit from these tests due to their extended detection, observing a period that can last up to 90 days. This method significantly limits cheating, although urine tests remain the accurate option for detecting recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. With its ability to trap biomarkers in the strands, hair delivers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake. When a sample is taken from near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for identifying alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send off for testing.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and analysis. For EtG tests, additional analyses, and/or when testing exceeds 10 panels, it's advisable to have 150mg of the sample. The specimen should be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four core steps in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage, involving entering the sample into a lab's system. It ensures the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes necessary data entry not covered by any electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Though it is a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug usage in most samples, positive screening results must be validated for court use. Samples that suggest positivity in Screening will need further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the collected sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other types (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair analysis as a challenging methodology.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation when required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to circumvent: It's highly challenging to alter a hair drug test, which enhances the reliability of results.
  • Historical usage data: These tests can identify a pattern of drug use over several months, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests by offering unparalleled accuracy and reliability for drug testing in Creston, OH. This advanced testing method reaches beyond the typical constraints of urine tests, providing a comprehensive evaluation of substance use that surpasses simple detection capabilities. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
