Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cynthiana, Ohio. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with our centers available in cities across the country capable of conducting such tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or elsewhere on the body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored testing options.

Recently, there has been a growing trend towards using hair follicle drug tests for screening. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are nearly immune to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests still hold high accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can render a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This encompasses confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing additional data entry not contained in an electronic chain of custody modality.

Screening signifies a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient method to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen warrants confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation to validate results.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive outcome during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is deemed the most intricate method to perform.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positives are washed appropriately before confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can spot drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to cheat: Efforts to cheat a hair drug test are largely unsuccessful, rendering results more reliable.
  • Gives historical insights: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Typically, it takes between 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Aspects like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine testing in Cynthiana, OH, the former stands out for its superior detection accuracy and trustworthiness. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can detect a wider range of substances over an extended timeframe, offering optimal results for stringent policy adherents.

Employers and organizations face fewer uncertainties with hair testing as it overlooks user manipulation, ensuring reliable results. This method outperforms urine testing by offering a comprehensive view of long-term substance intake, thus providing excellent support for compliance and safety initiatives.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window in Cynthiana, OH, making it a valuable tool for employers. Unlike traditional methods, it tracks substance use up to 90 days, offering deeper insights into an individual's history. This comprehensive view helps employers make informed decisions.

This longer detection range is particularly beneficial for businesses aiming to maintain a secure environment. Employers gain access to an applicant's past habits, aiding in risk management and contributing to informed hiring practices.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Cynthiana, OH, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant approach to drug screening, significantly curtailing sample alteration risks. With observed sample collection, the integrity of the test remains intact, ensuring authentic results that withstand scrutiny.

This method's resilience against manipulation makes it invaluable. Employers trust its outcomes to maintain workplace integrity and uphold safety standards, as it leaves no room for test cheating, providing confidence in the reliability of results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
