In Danville, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Catering to needs for hair drug or alcohol tests, we excel in hair testing with centers nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular over the years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over urine samples. This method benefits organizations with strict no-drug policies, as it offers up to a 90-day detection window, ensuring reliable results. Yet, for recent drug use during the last five days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it may offer a detection range up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, generally resistant to tampering, and convenient to dispatch.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is considered the ideal sample size for both initial screening and further confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. Head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The key phases involved in laboratory testing of a drug sample result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial input of a specimen into the laboratory system. It confirms the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any remaining data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with questionable positive results during Screening must undergo secondary verification.

After a sample tests potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, chemicals are retrieved from hair at significantly lower levels than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug tests one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

For Confirmation of any positive results, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. All potential positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the detection period for urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Compromising a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in high accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need around 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and differences in individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
