Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Darbyville, Ohio. Whether the need is for a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers available in all major cities nationwide. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to fit different testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard in drug testing methods. Many entities, including employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, prefer hair tests over urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, these tests are chosen by employers, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Despite this, urine tests remain ideal for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to nearly a 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and affirmation. For EtG, extensions, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial adaptation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires affirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If a specimen is presumed positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much smaller concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: It is exceedingly tricky to deceive a hair drug test, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Offers usage history: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier in comparison to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
