Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Defiance, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and operates testing sites in every city across the country that can conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair tests can be scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer a hair drug test over the more traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. A major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug consumption, often reaching up to 90 days, collected through a supervised process, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. Still, the urine test remains the most precise for identifying drug use within the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of long-term alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not present, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result needs confirmation to be legally admissible. Any presumptive positive samples in Screening need a further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), leading to hair drug screening being the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection frame: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Yields historical information: It offers a timeline of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the strand of hair rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Defiance, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests through its superior detection and reliability. Where urine tests can be susceptible to evasion, hair testing captures a broad spectrum of substance history. Employers and courts favor hair tests as they offer a longer detection window, often giving clearer insights into an individual's drug use. This heightened level of accuracy and dependability makes hair testing the preferred method for many.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle test reveals a detailed drug use history, spanning up to 90 days. This expansive detection window in Defiance, OH, equips employers with a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use. By assessing such an extensive period, hair testing provides a more complete profile of an applicant or employee's habits, enabling informed decision making for maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing stands out as a tamper-resistant method in Defiance, OH. Unlike urine samples, hair tests are significantly less vulnerable to adulteration, ensuring the integrity of the sample remains intact. This translates into results that are reliable and difficult to dispute, offering individuals and institutions peace of mind that they are receiving genuine and unaltered information.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
