Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Drexel, Ohio. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers nationwide are equipped to perform these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

The popularity of hair follicle testing has risen in recent years as it offers a more reliable alternative to traditional urine tests. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer this method. Hair drug tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation programs. This test offers a detection period of up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is difficult to tamper with. However, for detection within five days, a urine test remains more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate a long-standing record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the expanding hair fiber. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it can offer up to roughly a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is advised. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair could be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of processing a drug test result in a laboratory comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This process includes confirming the sample was sealed and delivered appropriately, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary, rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in the major portion of samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be initially positive within the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are retrieved from hair at a substantially lesser concentration than other modalities (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over an extended duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms urine tests in Drexel, OH due to its superior detection reliability. The hair test method is highly sensitive, providing a more comprehensive detection timeline. Employers favor hair tests as they significantly reduce the chances of false negatives caused by manipulations as seen in urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
